Agile Is Childish

It was the first day back in training for the U10 football team this morning. We had the kids doing dribbling and running drills to help them get back into the swing of it all, and to give them a taster of the activities to come. They completed the drill four times, and after each time they were asked how it went, how they felt and what they could do to improve their times. This was agile training.

What was fantastic to see was that the coach running the session wasn’t aware of this, and of course the kids had no idea what agile was. This was a bunch of kids doing what kids do best; working together, using peer review, and being comfortable with failure and change. What we consume as agile training in a commercial environment, what we purchase all wrapped up in a hardback book or slick presentation with high production values come all too naturally to kids. Maybe we just need to get in touch with our younger selves in the search for agile excellence. Maybe it’s time to get childish.
